Buying Toshiba Satellite L555D-S7930 TruBrite 17.3-Inch Black Laptop - 2 Hours 30 Minutes of Battery Life (Windows 7 Home Premium)

Toshiba Satellite L555D-S7930 TruBrite 17.3-Inch Black Laptop

Most of it works great, but the main reason I bought the laptop was to do our church powerpoint slides. It ran great for a minute on the powerpoint projector, but then kept losing the signal and we'd lose it all and have to reboot. I updated the display driver and was really hoping that was it. No such luck. We've ended up having to go back to the old laptop that that can't even run Powerpoint 2007 which is what my desktop has...so I have to convert it all when I upload to the church's computer. I will try another laptop and hope this time it will all work the way it's supposed to. I'm hoping this is the only style that has this issue and that the other Toshiba's of this size will work for me. If anyone has suggestions, please let me know.Get more detail about Toshiba Satellite L555D-S7930 TruBrite 17.3-Inch Black Laptop - 2 Hours 30 Minutes of Battery Life (Windows 7 Home Premium).

Buy Sony VAIO VGN-NW270F/T 15.5-Inch Brown Laptop (Windows 7 Home Premium)

I purchased this laptop a month ago and i can tell you that it excellent buy for the price. Windows 7 IS GREAT. Direct Web option by SONY is such a great bonus. no worries of switching the laptop on/off. Within 10 secs you are connected to web and switch off at the same fast pace. The LCD clarity is stunning. Not to forget , BLU-RAY Player in-built plays movies awesomely. Yeah the only downside is Direct WEB option does not provide brightness adjustment and Battery life is 2.5 hrs only. But overall, i am happy with power-packed features compared to the price.Get more detail about Sony VAIO VGN-NW270F/T 15.5-Inch Brown Laptop (Windows 7 Home Premium).

Purchase HP G70-460US 17-Inch Laptop

I am satisfied with product. I obtained the recommendations from Consumer Reports and noted this particular HP product was one of the "best buy" recommendations just below the pricier products also recommended. You will find less space for the cord for 110 voltage hookup in your travel pack since the 17 inch takes up all the space inside the usual sized/shaped carrier. The larger-sized screen also provides a much more comfortable-sized keyboard to use with the device. The cordless mouse purchased with device made the package as comfortable as a home model. Order Toshiba Satellite P505-S8970 18.4-Inch Black Laptop - 2 Hours 40 Minutes of Battery Life (Windows 7 Home Premium)

It is a very good computer, lots of memory, lots of space, but the only big problem that I did'nt figure out until I recieved it, is that it's really really big, so it's not easy to transport.I knew it was going to be big, which I wanted because of my work, but I did'nt thought that it would be that much. Where To Buy Toshiba Satellite M505-S4985-T 14.0-Inch Black/Onyx Laptop - 3 Hours 15 Minutes of Battery Life (Windows 7 Home Premium)

I love everything this laptop has to offer. The ONLY thing I can say negative about it... because some days it drives me crazy.. is the fact that it's glossy all over...which leaves fingerprints and oily imprints all over where you touch.. easy fix though, just wipe down with a rag or papertowel. It's a touch-screen...in case, ya' missed that bit. I have only used the touch-screen a few times.. it's not needed...but it is neat. I've had the laptop for about a month now. The sound on this thing is great! Loud. One thing I've noticed about Toshiba's... they have descent sound. My last laptop was a Toshiba... lasted me a good 4yrs.. and probably would still be good... only I ruined it by taking it to Iraq with me years back.. so the cd/dvd area no longer works. Still have my old one though and use it for basic things like photo editing n such. Overall, I'd say this new laptop is kick@ss. The keys are quiet.. and I love Windows 7.Get more detail about Toshiba Satellite M505-S4985-T 14.0-Inch Black/Onyx Laptop - 3 Hours 15 Minutes of Battery Life (Windows 7 Home Premium).

Shop For Lenovo Ideapad U-550 15.6-Inch Black Laptop - Up to 6 Hours of Battery Life (Windows 7 Home Premium)

I was just about to purchase this Ideapad U550 from [...] but, I read the first review on this product and changed my mind due to the color comments. The ones on Lenovo website are DARK BROWN, I read these ones were BLACK but NOT... they're DARK BROWN also so don't get confused. The color is not bad, let's say it's different from the one I thought I was purchasing.

I recieved my deapad U550 (model # 374959U) on Dec 10th and so far it's up to spec, shipping was pretty fast (Free Super Saving) and got on the third day to South Texas.

If you don't mind getting a DARK BROWN laptop, this is a great value for $699.99 (4GB + 320GB), if you want to save $110 usd, get the 3GB + 250GB HD.

Note: Amazon's description says it's 1000GB but it's a 320GB HD.

Happy Holidays !!!Get more detail about Lenovo Ideapad U-550 15.6-Inch Black Laptop - Up to 6 Hours of Battery Life (Windows 7 Home Premium).

Compaq Presario CQ60-420US 15.6-Inch Laptop

I purchased two Compaq laptops for Christmas 2008. Four months into using my laptop, the screen spontaneously cracked. I hardly took it anywhere and when I did I used a heavy duty carry case. HP/Compaq took it into consideration for repair, at my expense. $429 to replace the screen, I opted out. The second pc has a glitch where the screen has to be repositioned every 30 minutes or so when it goes all white.
After fighting HP on the first pc I have no will to do so on the second. They don't live up to the "Built to Last" sticker on the keyboard. HP does not live up to their warranty. My 16 family members have agreed to never by HP/Compaq products ever again.

Dell D600 Pentium M 1.6GHz 512MB 30GB CDRW/DVD 14.1" XPH - B Top Quality

I've always been a fan of the Dell D600 (and D610) since I first used them at work. These units are true workhorses that never let you down, regardless of the application used on them. So when it came time to order a laptop for my son for his impending college trek, the choice was easy.

I know, buying a refurbished anything is a crapshoot, but not so with this laptop. the unit actually came to me looking better than described and performs flawlessly. My son's happy...I'm happy...you'll be happy, too and save some cash to boot!

NOTE: The unit does come with Windows XP but NOT with Office, thus the 4-star rating.

Sony VAIO VGN-NW280F/B 15.5-Inch Black Laptop (Windows 7 Home Premium) Best Quality

There are a lot of things great about this one. It arrived with no dead pixels. It looks great. Buying the silver on was the way to go. You can see the keyboard better, and watching movies on this thing with the silver boarder is great. The keyboard, is nice and quiet and smooth typing. The only thing slightly negative thing is the location of the touch pad. It is far enough from the space bar, but it is really close to the outer edge of the laptop. I am sure I will get use to it, but it seems that when I go to use the pad, with my middle finger, and my thumb positioned on the edge of the laptop, I seem to be starting at the top of the touch pad, hence starting at the top of the screen with my cursor - very minor. The initial setup was easy, and once I saw Windows 7 for the first time, I was quite impressed with it. Reason why I got this machine was the Blu-Ray player and the HDMI, 1080p output. Been downloading the software I work with and everything is working out great. I also use Virtual Clone Drive and AnyDVD HD, both from Slysoft to burn my Blu-Ray movies and view them onto my 47-inch LCD TV. This is definitely a must buy, and at this price, it's great.Get more detail about Sony VAIO VGN-NW280F/B 15.5-Inch Black Laptop (Windows 7 Home Premium).

I bought this laptop sony vaio vgn-fw510f about one mounth ago...I am really amazed by the way it lokks, because I have never imagined a laptop to look so bussiness...it's awesome...i really recomend it to everyone who needs a laptop...the screen resolution is 16:9...it's a little wierd at the beggining, but now I wouldn't change it for anything in the world!and the performances are really good... maybe the autonomy of the battery is a little small, something like two hours!but with all of this you will have the chance to have a really powerfull, fancy and performant laptop, named sony;))...thank you, and excuse my english, I am from Romania:D...enjoy it!Get more detail about Sony VAIO VGN-FW510F/T 16.4-Inch Brown Laptop (Windows 7 Home Premium).

Lenovo Ideapad U-450p 14-Inch Black Laptop - Up to 6 Hours of Battery Life (Windows 7 Home Premium) Buy Now

This is a great laptop. It is a true thin and light ultra-portable laptop (at less than 4.6 lbs). Unlike most 13 inch models, this 14 inch comes with the optical dvd drive built-in and still provides with 6 hrs of usable battery life. It has a very compact feel when carried due to the very narrow tapered front. Performance has been fine for most of the common tasks so far and just having the 4gb ddr3 memory helps quite a bit. Another interesting thing is that this laptop remains cool even after 6 hours of continuous usage. The bright LCD screen and colors are really good too.

Overall, definitely one of the best choices in thin and light ultra-portable laptops for people who need to have the dvd drives built-in.Get more detail about Lenovo Ideapad U-450p 14-Inch Black Laptop - Up to 6 Hours of Battery Life (Windows 7 Home Premium).

Lowest Price Lenovo Thinkpad T500 15.4-Inch Black Laptop - Up to 6.3 Hours of Battery Life (Windows XP Pro)

I purchased a new thinkpad with accessories all of which were back ordered. I had problems with setting up the home network in the Windows 7 system. I called their service and they denied the warranty I had just paid for. Their order status web site is always down. The 866 order status phone based system is a bunch of barely English speaking people who also do not have server access. My accessories are on a never ending delay (up to three months now). I bought Adobe Creative Suite Windows ED not knowing that ED did not mean edition but meant "educational". I did not get a serial number and could not activate the software. To return it cost me $50! Never again will I order a Lenovo.Get more detail about Lenovo Thinkpad T500 15.4-Inch Black Laptop - Up to 6.3 Hours of Battery Life (Windows XP Pro).

Low Price Viliv Promotion Pack X70EX EXP P 7-Inch Net-Tablet PC

not having the patience to wait for the rumored apple tablet computer i decided to give the villiv a try as the specs were not bad. first off, the build quality seems to be pretty high. very sold, and somewhat heavy, feel to it. not the kind of device that you will hold in one hand while reading etc. definitely not a 'kindle'.

variety of ports is good, a full size usb port is included. only thing missing is ethernet. the real thing holding this device back is the software. in this age shipping a touch screen tablet computer with windows XP is just plain silly. xp is already outdated as it is, but try running it on such a tiny screen and its an exercise in frustration. sure, with the stylus you can hit keys pretty accurately but thats not what a touch screen should be about in 2009. i felt like a chicken pecking at corn. and of course, no gestures like zooming or scrolling as with an itouch. the qube interface is cute but hardly enough. you constantly have to jump to xp to have any real stuff done.

the main reason why i got this device was for its gps capability. unfortunately i could not get this to work. neither with ms streets and trips nor garmin mobile pc. not once did any software get a link to a satellite. probably just defective. but at least villiv should have included a utility for checking out the gps module. instead there was only one puny app to change the baud rate.

as for speed, the villiv not not disappoint in this area. pretty responsive for such a small machine. one word of caution, DO NOT GET THE 16GB VERSION. you are only left with something like 4GB for your own stuff. rest is used by the system (xp, hidden restore partition, etc). also do not password protect your account. you will not be able to logon from the welcome screen as the soft keyboard cannot be brought up at this point. (had to hook up a usb keyboard. image this happens while traveling. villiv, are you listening?)

in conclusion, if you need a mobile device that runs full fledged windows xp the villiv might just be the gadget for you. Get more detail about Viliv Promotion Pack X70EX EXP P 7-Inch Net-Tablet PC.

Save Lenovo Ideapad U-450p 14-Inch Black Laptop - Up to 6 Hours of Battery Life (Windows 7 Home Premium)

Got this machine and is all in all impressive for the price:

The good
- light machine
- pleasing textured finish
- windows 7 is fast and stable
- screen looks fantastic and playing movies with Windows Media Center is fulfilling
- sound quality is great
- fits perfectly into a 13.3" neoprene sleeve

The bad
- not sure whether the SIM card slot exists as advertised in the product manual
- battery life is slightly less than 5 hours and not 6 hours as advertised (I suppose this is reasonable)
- no bluetooth
- Windows 7 shipped with the device was not 64-bit as advertised
- Lenovo bloatware (I believe I have seen ads flashing on the desktop)
- Battery charge time is long

All in all it is a remarkable machine for its price. Happy with the purchase.Get more detail about Lenovo Ideapad U-450p 14-Inch Black Laptop - Up to 6 Hours of Battery Life (Windows 7 Home Premium).

Cheap ASUS K61IC-A1 16-Inch Black Versatile Entertainment Laptop (Windows 7 Home Premium)

I bought a Dell XPS M1530 November 2008 and it was subsequently stolen November of 2009. In my quest to replace my laptop I was stubborn & hesitant at first to stray from Dell having owned 3 laptops previously from them with no issues and nothing but excellent experience. I went shopping at a local Electronics retailer and stumbled upon this machine which is lesser known in the Southern US, however I have now learned they are the 3rd largest seller of laptop computers in the world and have won numerous awards. This machine is FAST it boots up to start menu in a mere 8 seconds flat which is impressive. Although there are faster machines out there, for the price of this one it is well worth it for under $1000. The screen picture is crisp as no other and is LED HD and has one of the best resolutions out there, great for movies and other video media. The internal sound card combined with alltec lansing speakers provide for an excellent sound also for music, etc. ALthough not as fancy to the eye or as gimicky as a Dell XPS this is as compatible as it gets and at a better price. also interesting is the 1yr warranty that protects you even from accidental dropping of the machine. 2 thumbs up, 5 stars, etc.Get more detail about ASUS K61IC-A1 16-Inch Black Versatile Entertainment Laptop (Windows 7 Home Premium).

Buying HP ProBook 5310m - Core 2 Duo SP9300 / 2.26 GHz - RAM 2 GB - HDD 320 GB - GMA 4500MHD - Gigabit Ethernet - WLAN : 802.11 a/b/g/n (draft 2.0), Bluetooth 2.1 EDR - Windows 7 Pro / XP Pro downgrade - 13.3" Widescreen TFT 1366 x 768 ( WXGA ) - camera - Smart Buy

I received one of these some time ago for our new shipping department. I have since put it through its steps and tested the win xp pro installation and the win 7 pro installation. It currently has win 7 pro on it. Here are my impressions of this business class/owner/user laptop.

****

Good:

1. Keyboard. What a lovely thing to type on! (However see the spacebar con listed below.) Possibly the nicest thing I have typed on since my IBM T42p.
2. Pleasing external aesthetic build. HP did a good job on this one imo....
3. Battery life. Come on - a 4 cell battery giving me 6 1/2 hours of word processing time? Great! Lets see what an 8, or even a 12 cell could do!
4. Speed and functionality. For the simple to medium level tasks I do this machine is completely adequate.
5. Trackpad and Mouse buttons. Also very serviceable indeed. For some reason I really like the Mouse Buttons. Not sure why....
6. Bluetooth and Wireless N. Always nice to have a machine with both.
7. Win XP Pro and Win 7 Pro. This is the ideal combination of OS offerings on a laptop for my situation.
8. Bang for the buck. I purchased the machine for about $970 after tax and shipping. I have been quite satisfied with it thus far.
9. Single screen hinge design. A personal favorite design wise for me.

****

Cons:

1. The main negative for this laptop I have come across is the spacebar. It is fine, but I myself have had problems getting it to register my typing with it. From what I hear this is an early issue, and that later laptops of this model do not have the same issue. There is also an unofficial fix for it (somewhat involved, and which users may not feel comfortable doing). Still - to me this was a discouraging design flaw imo.
2. Fingerprint magnet. *sigh* (More of an aesthetic complaint on my part, though.)

****

Middle of the Road things.

1. Hard drive noise. As others have noted every once in a while the hard drive sounds exceptionally loud - almost as if in fits and starts - and you can feel the machine vibrating every so slightly.
2. No optical drive. This should not be too much of an issue for business users who sometimes can simply hook up to a deployment server, but it still is nice to have as an option. It would not be too difficult to ship an external drive with the laptop proper imo, and would be helpful.
3. Low profile machine/heat issues. Personally I would have liked it if the HP somehow stood higher up for heat and air distribution. I have not had noticeable heat problems thus far - but it is a sort of general principle I prefer.
4. Single slot for Ram. Hmph ... two would have been preferable. Still - it functions quite nicely in both win xp pro and win 7 pro with 2gb.... This means upgrades in Ram will be expensive for the time being.

****

All in all this is an amazing machine. And if indeed the spacebar flaw was quickly fixed it is an absolute steal for the price it sells for. I am very much looking forward to seeing how well it will function battery life wise with a 6, 8 or even 12 cell battery!

If I could I would have given this machine 4 1/2 stars.Get more detail about HP ProBook 5310m - Core 2 Duo SP9300 / 2.26 GHz - RAM 2 GB - HDD 320 GB - GMA 4500MHD - Gigabit Ethernet - WLAN : 802.11 a/b/g/n (draft 2.0), Bluetooth 2.1 EDR - Windows 7 Pro / XP Pro downgrade - 13.3" Widescreen TFT 1366 x 768 ( WXGA ) - camera - Smart Buy.

I've had my laptop for just over a week so I will come update this later. So far I'm really enjoying it. It connects fast to the internet. I like the number pad on the right. The touch pad works great (though I prefer using a wireless mouse). I love the SD slot which is so much better than having to hunt down my camera cable. I like the wide screen. I like the silver color of the keyboard. About the only thing I have as a con so far is the sound isn't loud enough at times even when I have it up all the way, but that might partly be because of whatever program or application is running. I wish the battery lasted a little longer, too. I ordered a skin for the lid and a keyboard protector to keep it free of dust and debris (and cat hair). I'm hoping to upgrade the RAM, too, after Christmas.Get more detail about Toshiba Satellite L505D-S5983 Notebook - AMD AthlonTM II dual-core M300 2.0GHz 15.6" widescreen 3GB DDR2 320GB HD DVD±RW/CD-RW 802.11b/g Windows 7 Home Premium.

Purchase Acer Aspire Timeline AS5810TZ-4274 15.6-Inch Laptop - 8+ Hours Battery Life

This is an excellent laptop for the money! They sell one exactly like this one for about $120 to $150 more with Windows7; don't waste your money on that because you can get a FREE UPGRADE to Windows7 if you purchase it before Jan 31, 2010! The mousepad special features perform wonderfully and accurately. The mousepad is positioned in just the right place and has just the right amount of sensitivity for tapping. The battery does not last quite the 8 hours - more like 6 - but then again, I did not do the battery conditioning at first like you're supposed to ... I wish I did ... that probably makes the difference. This laptop freezes up whenever coming out of sleep mode ... I don't know for sure, but I think it might be a Vista issue ... I guess I'll find out soon enough as my Windows7 should arrive shortly. The computer performs beautifully, except for the aforementioned (as long as I don't let it enter sleepmode, I have no performance issues). One more thing, the sound (set at 100%) is very low when you play a dvd movie. I can't find any settings to adjust or change it, so I have to hook up speakers.Get more detail about Acer Aspire Timeline AS5810TZ-4274 15.6-Inch Laptop - 8+ Hours Battery Life.

Order Toshiba Satellite T135-S1310WH TruBrite 13.3-Inch Ultrathin Black/White Laptop - 9 Hours 22 Minutes of Battery Life (Windows 7 Home Premium)

Just received it yesterday. Was the quickest easiest setup I've ever had to do.

Even on the first full charge and nearly constant use. I can;t wear it out. I haven't stopped playing on it except to sleep. It's fast, light, powerful and good looking. I upgraded another (larger) laptop with Win 7 Home. I liked it a lot. This one with the factory loaded version. I like even better.

This just may have my favorite keyboard ever. The whole thing is just great. Well, with one exception. But then I already knew about it. The sound. I sure wish they had put it on top instead of underneath. Not a real problem for me. I prefer using headphones anyhow. I like the built in mouse pad. But again prefer my wireless mouse.

I just didn't think those two little things were enough to knock a star off. I also knew there wasn't an optical drive. I've got a USB cd/dvd hardrive so that's not an issue either. Wasn't sure if I would really like the white. I do though. It's not milk white and the pattern I find interesting.

Especially appreciated there not being a ton of software to remove. That hasn't been the case with any other computer I've owned. Gotta stop rambling here. Oh, the screen is great too. I tied the eco mode. Didn't hate it but am using equal setting and still get plenty of battery time. Where To Buy HP G60-440US 16-Inch Laptop

I've had my HP G60-440US laptop for four months now. During those four months, the laptop's been out of order (non-functioning) three different times for an aggregate period of about five weeks. During the first month, the hard drive crashed, and I couldn't turn the computer on. Then the little chippie-thing that allows the computer to connect to my wireless modem broke down. Most recently, the dvd player died while, at the same time, the new wireless card went kaputt. Consequently, I've had to send my laptop away to the service department twice, and have had to reinstall some chip or other part so that the computer could pick up a wireless signal. The computer has been a complete lemon. My friends warned me about purchasing an HP product, and I didn't listen.

One of the worst parts about my HP experience has been the attitude of the customer service people. The technical guys in India were nice enough, but they kept me on the line for more than an hour before they agreed that I wasn't lying about my hard drive having crashed. My experience with the managers in the U.S. was much worse. My conversation with customer service - notwithstanding all the scripted "I'm sorry to hear that, sirs" left me feeling absolutely powerless and with the feeling that, now that HP had my $500, they cared not a bit about my needs or satisfaction.

So, be warned - this is not a good product. I wish I had listened to my friends and spent a little more cash for a better product instead of this toy laptop. Get more detail about HP G60-440US 16-Inch Laptop.

Sony VAIO VGN-AW420F/H 18.4-Inch Gray Laptop (Windows 7 Home Premium)

I pre-ordered this laptop through Amazon so I could avoid the upgrade path of buying a laptop with vista and needing to hassle with the free upgrade. So I was waiting 3 weeks and anticipating having a cool huge beautiful spiffy computer. It is all that, but with that said, the windows 7 home premium is stripped down so i cant setup machinee to network with my work/office network and printers. So I had to buy a freaking anytime upgrade for 89.99 to get enterprise functionality. BS! I also learned that if you want language functionality you need to anytime upgrade to 7 ultimate. ALSO, problem with internet explorer 8 working with windows 7. I couldn't get my outlook to work right when attempting to launch a browser session from within outlook, clicking on an embedded link. After spending 3 hours with a knowledgeable friend trying to edit the registry settings, gave up and installed mozilla firefox.

The laptop is a desktop replacement so it eats battery life! great multmedia machine, quite impressive when pulling it out for clients for powerpoint show. The best thing I like so far is that I can zoom my browser session to 150% and dont need to use reading glasses when on-line and don't need to scroll sideways on the bottom scroll bar to see the whole web link or document.

I am not happy with Microsoft not doing the development work ahead of time and not being told ahead of time that the windows 7 home premium is really lame and offer me a reduced price upgrade path when i ordered the laptop. They should offer a $50 adder to get windows 7 professional and $100 for the ultimate version. Get more detail about Sony VAIO VGN-AW420F/H 18.4-Inch Gray Laptop (Windows 7 Home Premium).

Toshiba Satellite A505-S6992 TruBrite 16.0-Inch Black/Silver Laptop - 2 Hours 20 Minutes of Battery Life (Windows 7 Home Premium) This instant

I bought a Toshiba Laptop in August and I have had an absolutely AWFUL experience with Toshiba since the day I got this thing. On several occasions I have met with INEPT Technical and Customer Service staff and whenever my call was forwarded to a "Manager" the person basically reiterated the feedback from the staff, and on two occasions were RUDE and absolutely NO HELP AT ALL. When I mentioned in my last call that Toshiba Executives need to know how their customers are being treated and that I CANNOT recommend their computers to anyone in good conscience, I was told "suit yourself." To give you an idea of ALL the headaches I have undergone since I bought my computer....here is a short list:

1) My computer came with Windows Vista and kept crashing. Toshiba's Tech. people said that it was due to "glitches" with the operating system and said that I would have to back up my data and re-install the OS. Remember people, this is a NEW computer that is supposedly under warranty! Their Tech. people also had the nerve to tell me that they "did not have the training" to tell me how to back up my data and once I took it to Best Buy and PAID to have my data backed up, then they could tell me how to reload the OS!

2)Also, when I purchased the computer, there was a catalog insert in the Toshiba packaging that offered a 3-year extended warranty for 15% off. However, when I called Toshiba to buy the warranty, AGAIN, their Customer NON-Service people quoted me a price that was almost $100 more than the price in the catalog and told me that they did not know anything about the reduced price offered to purchasers of new Toshiba computers. When I told them that the catalog was sent INSIDE the Toshiba computer box that was sent to me from Amazon.com, they told me that I would need to "find a Kinkos and fax a copy of the catalog" to them "for review" and they will "see if the management will honor it"!!!!!!!!!

3)Finally, to add insult to injury -- when I purchased this computer, I was offered a "FREE" upgrade to Windows 7, but when I went online I found out that I had to PAY almost $12 for "shipping and handling". Okay, I swallowed that insult, but THEN after 25 minutes entering all the order info. the Toshiba site would not allow me to enter in my Credit Card number to pay for the thing. When I called their Customer Service people, they had NO CLUE what to tell me. After 45 MINUTES -- and after talking with 4 different people -- they FINALLY transferred me to a "Manager" who ALSO had NO idea what to do and said that "I guess the website must be having problems, so try again later"!!!

Look, all I can say to anyone who wants to buy a Toshiba is BUYER BEWARE. Their Tech. people have NO CLUE, their Customer Service is INEPT and their Management is DISGUSTINGLY RUDE!!! Dealing with Toshiba is a NIGHTMARE! Consider yourselves warned!Get more detail about Toshiba Satellite A505-S6992 TruBrite 16.0-Inch Black/Silver Laptop - 2 Hours 20 Minutes of Battery Life (Windows 7 Home Premium).

Lenovo Ideapad U-350 13.3-Inch Black Laptop - Up to 5 Hours of Battery Life (Windows 7 Home Premium) Immediately

I think this is a good laptop, but decided to return it. I researched lots of laptops in the moderately-priced 13.3-inch screen thin and light category. Ultimately, I was choosing between the Asus UL30A-X5 and the Lenovo. The Lenovo won out by a hair. I already own the 12-inch Asus UL 20A-A1, which I bought for the road and as an upgrade from a 10-inch netbook. I really like the 20A and recommend it. With that solid track record, why did I initially go with the Lenovo?

The biggest reason I went with the Lenovo is that I thought I would like the keyboard a bit more than the Asus. The Asus has a decent keyboard, but I thought the Lenovo, with the IBM lineage, would be superior. The Lenovo keyboard has a slightly more solid feel, but I can't say that everyone would prefer it to the Asus. It's probably just a matter of personal preference. The specifications of the units otherwise were similar. You'll see that a lot of online reviews downgrade the Lenovo for performance, but that was with a different processor, not the 7300.

The Lenovo has a fair amount of fan noise. I don't find it unduly distracting, but prefer the quieter Asus. I also think the Asus is a nicer-looking unit. The Lenovo's exterior is sharp looking, but the interior really exudes cheap plastic. I like the Lenovo's touchpad more than the Asus, which has kind of a funny texture. On the other hand, the Lenovo's "mouse" buttons beneath the touchpad give off an audible cheap plastic noise when you depress them -- something that doesn't occur with the Asus.

The other annoyance with the Lenovo is that it occasionally pops up with an offer to sell you something, and this also occurs during initial setup and installation. It's really tacky, and a big turn-off to me. It's oppressive compared to other computers I've purchased.

The Lenovo is just a tad lighter than the Asus UL30A; about 3.5 pounds versus about 3.7. The Asus screen appears to have more clarity and sharpness than the Lenovo.

Ultimately, I decided the Lenovo has a bit of a cheap feel about it. Combining that with the somewhat loud fan, the somewhat less clear screen than the Asus, and overall what seems like an inferior all-around design, I just wasn't entirely comfortable with the Lenovo. I'll probably go with the Asus. This really is kind of a toss-up, though, as I do think the Lenovo trackpad is superior and the keyboard is arguably superior as well. You really can't go wrong with either laptop. In an ideal world, you'd go to a store and check out both units, but I don't think that's going to be possible for most customers, as I don't believe these units are commonly in retail stores.

This is our second HP laptop after a series of HP desktops and current HP printers. Cannot say anything bad about them. I mean I bought the machine knowing its capacities and was not disapointed. Quality of build is good, we've had the CQ 50 139NR for over a year now, it is solid and doesn't come apart with steady use. Outside of more battery life, always want more, we have seen good products from HP. After 8 years we finally just scrapped an HP printer that wouldn't quit. On our Compaq Desktop (made by HP) I thought I needed service, (my bad) and they answered the phone quickly, and were able to remotely access my machine and then took care of everything, I just chatted with the guy over the phone as he cleaned up the mess I made with the software. Then the next day, HP service calls me just to ask if everything is working fine on my machine. A++ service too! I like HP, as long as they keep making good stuff and you can get their products at affordable prices!Get more detail about HP G60-549DX Laptop Notebook - Intel Pentium Dual-Core T4300 2.1GHz / 4GB DDR2 / 250GB HD / 15.6" LCD / Built-in webcam with microphone / Windows 7 Home Premium.

HP Mini 311 Series Order Now

I got this machine from Amazon based on Ubuntu reports leading me to believe it would work well, and the really easy access to memory and disk area this particular netbook provided.

Since I was going to use this as a Ubuntu machine primarily, I was not really too worried about what version of Windows was on it.

The video resolution is good - surprisingly, I can read everything when writing or web browsing even when set to the maximum hardware resolution. Part of my decision was the resolution, the HDMI output port - my hope being that this will be a sufficient machine for taking to make presentations (overhead projector); other netbooks have had special Fedora and Ubuntu spins, to deal with the low resolution, small screens. No need for any of that nonsense with this box! I did try the netbook spins, but was disappointed to not have that full desktop control and multi-windows that this little guy is more than competent at serving me.

On the airplane, this is small enough to work comfortably, and my bi-focals focus quite comfortably - the crispness of the screen at max resolution provides NO problems for these old (over 50) eyes, an unexpected surprise.

The keyboard has a nice feel, and although it is "only" ninety-some percent size, I can type comfortably for long spells; good for flights, and long commuter train rides (my intended use).

Bluetooth with Ubuntu (Ubuntu 9.10) works fine. I want a mouse with this machine, as the touchpad drivers for Ubuntu haven't yet caught up with the device identifiers for this new Alps touchpad. A simple pair of aliases easily turn off/on the touchpad for writing (that's when the mouse is handy; for more, see the mini 311 posts at 2linices.blogspot.com). There are people who seem to have partly solved the "usual" Linux touchpad behavior of turning off touch _while_ typing. That will be convenient. In Windows I simply turned off "tap" to make typing bearable. It's a GREAT touchpad, appropriately sensitive for navigating / scrolling.

I replaced the laptop drive with a Hitachi Travelstar 7K320 - 320GB 2.5" SATA 7200 RPM 16MB - Internal Hard Drive - 0A57547 I had laying around (note: the 7K320 _is_ a 7200 RPM drive; see data sheet at [...]. This drive has very low battery consumption when not reading/writing (lower than the drive shipping with this 311). I also got 2GB 1066MHZ DDR3 Non-ecc Sodim to bring the total system up to 3G. I run with the NVidia Linux driver, and have setup for 3 virtual screens - a pleasing desktop, and plenty of RAM to handle multiple applications.

Wireless networking has worked without a hitch. A button will save battery life by turning off wifi; turning it back on resumes search for a wireless connection. I also use the IOGear USB 2.1 Bluetooth Micro Adapter GBU421 with my Logitech bluetooth mouse (no fuss, no problems).

Skype works fine - surprisingly clear to people I call with the built in mic and speakers; but it's better with my Logitech ClearChat Comfort USB Headset (Black). I have not yet tried to bond my cellular bluetooth headset, but don't expect any problems. This would be a great way to use Skype. Playing music on the plane (iTunes or RhythmBox) is great through the speaker bar which is along the front edge (headphones / headset just makes it nicer).

I have played around with making a multi-boot disk, so I can come up in Windows, or a couple of different Linux distributions.

With a 2G+ USB stick I don't really want / need a CD/DVD drive (there are 3 USB ports). But I can boot any operating system I want to test / try out on either a USB stick, or an external USB hard drive - F9 lets you select the boot device.

I rarely turn this machine off - close the lid, and it goes to sleep; open it up, and it powers up. Yes, it will loose battery this way... but over days. On the road, I plug my iPod and phone into the USB ports to charge overnight. To keep the machine powered, closing the lid to about 30 degrees turns off the screen backlight without suspending the machine.

It's not a computing powerhouse (I would not want to compile large systems, or do Photoshop with it), but its great for writing, staying connected (internet), talking (skype), or keeping yourself entertained (internet radio or rhythmbox music, or online videos). In a pinch, you _can_ run "powerhouse" programs, but clearly this machine is for running 5+ hrs unplugged. You may also notice, as I did, that it seems significantly more responsive running Ubuntu Linux than Windows. I think this gives the machine that much more utility.

In summary - everything works as I would expect (except touchpad control in Ubuntu, for which I found a reasonable workaround), and pleasantly so. I gave it 4 stars for one simple reason: price / configuration: with a drive, ram, and (if you're going to go commercial operating system) a Windows7 upgrade (a more satisfying choice than Windows-XP), the total gets up there. You can get a subsidy if you sign a contract with a phone provider (e.g. Verizon) and get a cell-phone module in it. But regardless, I like this compared to competitive offerings. I'd like to see HP start with Windows7 as a default, and "certify" some Linux option (I picked Ubuntu simply because of Android phones - also open source - being developed on Ubuntu).

Green machine; happy owner. Now all I need from this box is some reasonable years of service.

Dell Inspiron 1545 15.6-Inch Jet Black Laptop - Up to 4 Hours 34 Minutes of Battery Life, MS Home and Student Software Included (Windows 7 Home Premium) Right now

I've owned several laptops and would be considered an intermediate to advanced computer user. I've built my own desktops, tweaked a few laptops and owned various brands of laptops including HP, Fujitsu, Sony and Dell (Inspiron, Latitude and XPS series).

I purchased this exact laptop directly from Dell (got a better deal than current Amazon pricing) based upon Consumer Report's November 2009 article recommendations where the Dell Inspiron 1545 was rated a 'Best Buy' for every day computing. I purchased it for my husband who will use it primarily for watching an occasional movie from Netflix streaming wirelessly on our home network, emailing to share jokes and videos with his friends, and browsing the Internet.

After setting it up, which other than running into a snag with my home network was a breeze, and playing with it for about an hour, these are my impressions.

The PROS:
+ Comes with Windows 7 - no need to upgrade, and the 64-bit combined with the more than adequate memory makes things move nicely. Slightly different than Vista's look, but should be easy to use.
+ Adequate hard drive (mine came with a 320) for storing photos, videos and music.
+ Great 1.3mp webcam which delivers pretty nice snapshots (not too grainy) as well as excellent video (very little drag of movement).
+ Good speakers! Better than those on my Dell XPS, for which I paid 30% more less than a year ago.
+ 3 usb ports
+ Bright 15.6" display; nice size. I sometimes find the 13" on the XPS too small and the Fujitsu had a 17" which is fine for a desktop replacement but really adds weight to the overall unit.
+ Virtually silent running. No fan noise to speak of and yet...
+ Stays cool to the touch! Not worried about overheating on this one.

The CONS:
- Keyboard is OK, but not as responsive as some others I've used.
- The touchpad seems a tad small and the buttons (left/right click) seem too low by comparison to the keyboard. It could be the size of my hands (small...) but I tend to think it's just the layout.
- The high gloss finish inside and the glossy display (versus matte finish) look cool, but do show fingerprints and reflect light to the point of sometimes being a nuisance.
- There is no 'media only' button like on the XPS where you don't have to turn on the computer to watch a movie, but this is something that higher end laptops would have and may simply be a perk to paying more.
- Heavier than some others, but at under six pounds, it's still not too bad.
- Matte finish on the outside shows greasy smudges where you've touched it. I have the same issue with my XPS, but frankly I've never found a finish that doesn't show something.
- Not a multi-media or gaming powerhouse. It will play dvd's and games, but if you're buying a laptop and really into those things, spend a bit more and make sure you upgrade your video and audio to support your interests. The 4GB of memory really helps as much as anything and I didn't notice any issues with the media I tested.

SET-UP:
The only issue I had with setting up this laptop was with my home network not being accepted because Windows 7 didn't like the security settings I had in place. I could get the 1545 to recognize my network, but it wouldn't connect until I changed the settings. I had my wireless settings on WEP and Windows 7 wanted WPA. Once I changed the settings, the laptop connected. I then had to go to 8 different devices on my network and make sure they were happy. Only one item: Myine Electronics IR001 WiFi Internet Radio Adaptor wasn't happy, but eventually accepted the settings with some concentrated tweaking.

BATTERY LIFE:
Battery life seems to be about 3.5 hours. I think the 4+ hour estimate is high, but that undoubtedly is also based upon what things you are doing on the laptop and mobile power settings.

CONCLUSION:
If you purchase this Dell you are getting a solid workhorse for every day computing for a fair price. I think it's quality is certainly higher than an Acer with the same specs, and backed by a 1 year warranty from Dell. (Having had a Dell laptop that needed the keyboard replaced recently, I truly think the warranty service provided by Dell - they came to my house the next day - is exceptional and worth the small price hike over some other brands.)

The Dell Inspiron 1545 is perfect for a student, a grandma who likes to email or wants to keep up with the grandkids on Skype, or anyone who has no need for the latest and greatest gaming, multi-media computer. For a laptop with a webcam, 4GB memory, and Windows 7 (64-bit) that's ready to fly right out of the box... it's a good choice.

**WIRELESS NOTE: If you are having trouble connecting to a wireless network, be sure you check the included 'set-up guide', page 10, to find the wireless key on your keyboard. You can inadvertently press this key and turn off your wireless capabilities. Handy on airplanes... not so handy at home.Get more detail about Dell Inspiron 1545 15.6-Inch Jet Black Laptop - Up to 4 Hours 34 Minutes of Battery Life, MS Home and Student Software Included (Windows 7 Home Premium).

Lowest Price Acer Aspire Timeline AS1810TZ-4013 11.6-Inch Black Laptop - Over 8 Hours of Battery Life (Windows 7 Home Premium)

Upgraded from an older Acer 15.4" notebook. Compact and way more powerful than a similar sized 'netbook'. Absolutely worth the extra couple a hundred dollars. I'm also a longtime Media Center enthusiast, so its nice to have a second portable computer to stream movies and TV shows. Windows 7 is great as well. I recommend purchasing a portable DVD drive to create the restore disks first thing. Also, dont forget to condition the battery about 3 times by fulling charging it without the computer on, and then turn on and run on battery power until completely out of juice. I upgraded to 4 GB memory and also disabled all unneccassry start-up items. I got it at the $549 price and the performance is just excellent for the money. The only con I'd have to point out is that my picky eye notices the imperfect screen, which doesnt allow for wide viewing angles without some shadows. Also, the color temperature appears just a bit cool (blueish tint) but I've been able to overlook that. Otherwise, LOVE this little machine. Discount Toshiba Satellite T115-S1105 11.6-Inch LED TruBrite Black/Grey Laptop - 9 Hours 22 Minutes of Battery Life (Windows 7 Home Premium)

I love this little laptop. I had actually bought an Asus Eee PC netbook (1.6 Ghz single core processor) and it just didn't have the speed to do what I needed, so I bougth this Toshiba. I wanted something lightweight that I could take to school without weighing me down. I also needed a long battery life because many of my classes are 3 hours long. Unfortunately I also needed something with decent processing power, which the Asus netbook did not provide.

My last laptop was a Toshiba Satellite (3yrs old, running on 2.7 Ghz dual core processor and 3GB Ram) and I can't tell a speed difference between this one and my old one. While it won't be as fast as some of the bigger workhorse computers, it handles multitasking with ease and rarely any noticeable lag. This little PC is lightweight, I realisticly get about 7.5-8 hrs of battery life in the eco mode (I don't know how they get the 9.5hr rating), and it's got enough speed to handle the multitasking my graduate classes require.

I also plan to upgrade the ram, because I'm running 64bit windows and I'm a little geeky so I like the best specs possible (however it is fast enough for me as it is), and also buy an external optical drive/burner. The sound was low, but Toshiba's website has an updated driver that improves that significantly, but I still wouldn't buy this for the sound quality. The touchpad is sensitive when set at factory specifications, but you can turn off all the frills if they annoy you. This Dell Studio XPS 1640 was a very good buy. Its battery lasts a little less than three hours when browsing the web and some light work in Word with the help of Dell Extended Battery Life. All the newer games I've tried have very acceptable framerates with most settings at High. Om most older games such as Oblivion and The Sims 2 I can leave the options at Very High and I haven't found any noticeable slowdown.

I also do all my programming and college work in this computer and I'm very happy with it. Get more detail about Dell Studio XPS 1640 15.6-Inch Obsidian Black Laptop - Up to 3 Hours 8 Minutes of Battery Life (Windows 7 Home Premium).

Buying Acer Aspire AS5532-5535 Laptop Notebook - 15.6" LCD / AMD Athlon TF-20 1.6GHz / 3GB DDR2 / 160GB HD / DVD±RW/CD-RW drive / 802.11b/g/Draft-N / Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

like the others i was sold on the low price and considerable amount of ram, both on the graphic end and the computing end. i find it difficult to multitask on this computer. definitely not designed for windows 7. i can imagine this computer being a lot faster running either 32 bit xp or 64 bit xp. freezes up when i play around w/ windows media player so i dont use it. great for my games. lags sometimes though which is a bit disheartening. the audio driver or the actual device crackles when i raise and lower the volume manually. cant record my guitar into my digital audio workstation without lag or crackles in my recording so i dont bother with that either anymore which is rather depressing. photoshop runs a little slow. i guess what im trying to say is that if youre looking for a decent computer for basic computing needs then this is for you. i guess i shouldve waited though until i could afford something with a little more power. ah well. im not entirely dissapointed. i like it. its sleek. the screen is crystal clear. internal wireless network adapter picks up connections even if theyre just barely in range and the touch pad is very good compared to other laptops ive used. cant ask for a better computer for the price.Get more detail about Acer Aspire AS5532-5535 Laptop Notebook - 15.6" LCD / AMD Athlon TF-20 1.6GHz / 3GB DDR2 / 160GB HD / DVD±RW/CD-RW drive / 802.11b/g/Draft-N / Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.
